“We don’t stop playing when we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.”
George Bernard Shaw
The National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all children:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.
Intent – What are we aiming to achieve?
At St Lawrence Primary School, we aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities, both competitive and non-competitive. We are fortunate to be situated in a very rural location with extensive woodland on our doorstep which we use to the full – mountain biking, rambling and outdoor education feature strongly! We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, as well as strive to improve their own personal best. Our aim is that by the time they leave St Lawrence, every child will have acquired the confidence and skill to represent the school in an interschool competition.
Implementation – How are we aiming to achieve this?
We have PE afternoons for both KS1 and KS2 children taught by well trained teachers and skilled sports coaches. We are extremely fortunate to have a sports coach from St. Michael's working with out EYFS/Year 1 Class this year. Our Y2 children have weekly swimming lessons taught with a ratio of 1:4 with highly skilled teachers. The long term overview sets out what is to be taught across each year, ensuring that we have full coverage of the National Curriculum.
We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school. We have an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. We have 4 trained pupils who are ‘Sports Leaders’, their role is to encourage and guide our younger children during playtimes.
Annual sporting events are highlights of the school calendar. These include sports afternoon which is a hugely enjoyable occasion with a healthy balance of competitive spirit and good sportsmanship.
The children have the opportunity to participate in over twenty different sports during their time at St Lawrence, these include team sports (football, netball, rugby and cricket) to individual sports (triathlon, cycling, cross county). Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres. As a result, our aim is that all children will leave St Lawrence with skills that will have a positive impact on the rest of their fitness and wellbeing for the rest of their lives.
Impact – How do we know that this has been achieved?
We help motivate children to participate in a wide variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our sessions, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
Inclusion
We ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability, can participate fully by adapting activities, using a range of equipment, modifying rules, and creating a supportive environment. We use clear and concise instructions, and visual aids as appropriate. All of our pupils are encouraged, and given the opportunity, to represent our school in inter-school competitions..
