Welcome to Beech Class!
Mrs Jones is the class teacher for Beech Class.
Welcome back! I hope you have had an enjoyable and restful half term holiday.
HUGE congratulations to our first prefects - Evie, Charlotte and Ollie!
IMPORTANT REQUEST - it would be really helpful if your child has a small basic literacy toolkit in school which includes a pen to write with (fountain pen preferable, not a biro or ballpoint pen), some highlighters and a rubber of their own. Many thanks!
If you get chance, please do ask your child to bring home their published guidebook to Antarctica. The children worked very hard on these last half term, learning a lot about the geography and history of Antarctica. They will also be available for parent perusal at the work sharing on Wednesday 1st November.
Our class topic this half term is The Amazon Rainforest! Our Power of Reading book for this half term is 'Journey to the River Sea'. Parents, if you have any resources or books that you think may be useful for our topic, please do let us know or send them in.
In maths lessons we will be focusing on multiplication and division and statistics over the next few weeks. Our science learning is 'living things'. We will be learning about life cycles and classification, all linked to our Amazon topic.
Please click here to download our new pick and mix homework menu for this half term, linked to our Amazon topic. we had some fantastic engagement with the pick and mix home learning last half term and certificates and prizes will be awarded shortly for those children who earned over 20 stars. Well done!
Home learning journals will be collected in on Wednesdays and given out on Fridays.
Reading, spelling practice, times tables practice should be happening throughout the week, preferably every day. This is included on the pick and mix menu as well so that more stars can be earned!
Please also talk to your children about the book they are reading in class during their guided reading sessions - they really enjoy this opportunity for focused group work. Currently, we are reading the following books chosen by the children themselves: Inkheart, Northern Lights, The Blue Death and St Tiggywinkle's Wildlife Hospital.
Mathletics is up and running too.
All children in Beech class have a grammar and mental arithmetic book which they are welcome to take home and work on at their choosing.
We practice our personalised spelling words in class three times a week using a cued spelling approach. More information here: http://www.ladylumleys.n-yorks.sch.uk/uploads/files/spld/resources/Cued%20Spelling.pdf
Alongside this, the children have a list of words to learn each week and they will have an opportunity to demonstrate the words they have learned on a Friday each week. These words will go home in a small, green spelling book each Friday. Please ensure these spelling books come back into school every Friday so that the children can note down their new words.
Please click here to see all the year 5 and 6 statutory words the children need to be able to read and spell by the end of Year 6. Children should also be able to read and spell all the year 3 and 4 statutory words.
PE and sport
We are very excited to be offering archery, football and hockey on Monday afternoons for our KS2 PE lessons during November and December! Please ensure that PE kit, warm and waterproof layers and suitable outdoor trainers (different to field shoes) are in school.
